Tattoupées are a tin of 35 temporary toupée-like tattoos created by Archie McPhee for ‘your favorite baldy.’

It’s the hat tat for the adventurous baldy

Once you have some Tattoupées, you’ll know exactly what to do when you look at that expanse of empty space on a bald man’s head. This set of 35 temporary tattoos is designed to be put on bald heads as a Tattoupee. From the power outlets to a spit curl to an actual tattoo toupee, you’ll have trouble deciding which one to put on first. This is the perfect gift for an over the hill party or any time you’d like to tease the follicly challenged. They’re so cool, you’ll wish you were bald. (At least that’s what you’ll tell them.) Each set of Tattoupées comes in a beautifully decorated collectible tin.

Realistic human figure sculptures by Ron Mueck

The sculptures are painstakingly crafted primarily out of silicone, polyester resin, fiberglass and synthetic hair. They very widely in scale, from miniature, to life-size, to enormous sculptures that depict only a portion of the body. To see how he makes his sculptures, take a look at these behind-the-scenes photos by Gautier Deblonde.

Mueck’s work will be on display at two upcoming exhibitions: ‘Lifelike,’ a group show at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, March 1 to May 27, 2013, and a solo exhibition at Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris, April 16 to September 29, 2013.

Moving of the MFO building in Zurich 2012, time lapse from Patrick Gautschy on Vimeo.

Last May in Zurich, the MFO Building, a 19th century 3 story brick office building, was placed on rollers and moved nearly 200 feet over the course of 17 hours. The remarkable feat of engineering was captured in this time-lapse by Swiss photographer Patrick Gautschy. The 260 foot long, 6,200 tonne structure was built in 1889 as part of the Oerlikon machine factory complex. It was slated for demolition to make way for the expansion of a nearby rail station, however a public petition to save the building led to the complex operation to relocate it.

An Idea Journal Packed With Inspirational Photography Quotes:

An Idea Journal Packed With Inspirational Photography Quotes journal4

Inspirational quotes are usually the realm of motivational posters and self-help books, and idea journals the realm of writers (thank you very much) but that doesn’t mean photographers can’t get a piece of that action.

Along those lines, San Francisco-based artist Lisa Congdon has put together a photography-themed journal that is packed full of inspirational photography quotes and over 100 lined pages for you to fill with ideas for your next shoot.

To add her own stamp to the journal, many of the quotes are accompanied by painting of vintage cameras that were actually done by Congdon herself.

With an international career that spanned nearly 80 years, Niemeyer (1907-2012) paved the way for Brazil’s urban modernization as South America’s  innovative, prolific architect. His 600-projects list includes distinctive monuments that express what the jury of the Pritzker Architecture Prize stated as ‘the distillation of colors, light and sensual imagery of his native land.’

I have remained faithful to Flickr over many years now, where I host over 22,ooo photos already. I am really excited that Yahoo is improving the mobile app for Flickr:

Our latest update to the new iPhone app is here! It brings quite a few features that many of you have asked for.

    EN_iphone_2-1_3 EN_iphone_2-1_2 EN_iphone_2-1_1

Take the conversations to another level!
You can now mention your friends right from the app. Start by typing in the @ sign, and then simply select one of your Flickr contacts to mention them in a title, description or comment. We will notify your friends that you mentioned them.

    Download your photos!
You can now download your own photos from Flickr to your camera roll. Just tap the share icon on any of your photos and tap ‘Save Photo’. A few seconds later the photo will be in your iPhone’s camera roll in the largest available resolution.

    Faster than light (nearly)!
Uploads from the Flickr app are much faster. We did some magic to optimize uploads, but also start uploading in the background while you think about the photo’s title or where you want to share it to. You basically get the best of both worlds: High resolution uploads that will make sure that you can enjoy your photos in great quality in the future, plus fast uploads in the background, so that you don’t have to wait.

And there is more: Photos that you take with the Flickr camera are now immediately saved to your camera roll. We also now display an even higher resolution image in the lightbox view, so you can zoom in further and see all of the details. Lastly you can now take photos in a snap by using your iPhone’s volume up button.

Head over to our iPhone App page and grab the latest version of Flickr for iPhone. If you have any questions or want to give us feedback, join us in the Flickr for iPhone group.

Still hot: The Top 10 Flickr for iPhone Tips we published recently.

    Very impressive time-lapse video:

Civilization: Part I – Europe from Dominic on Vimeo.

This first installment in this multi-part series is the beginning of a long-term project in which I want to capture the rise of modern civilization, from ancient societies to the bustling and modern cities of today.

Travelling to Europe made me realize how much the past is still present in our everyday lives. Our cultural institutions are the product of those who lived before us and of the societies they built. The remnants of the past are still a significant part of the modern era.

In Civilization: Part I – Europe, I travelled to 14 cities in 4 countries filled with history who had major influences in shaping the world in which we live in: England, France, Italy and Spain.

In these locations you can see the remains of the vast Roman Empire, the intertwined Muslim, Christian and Jewish cultures, the birthplace of the Age of Enlightenment, the European emblem of parliamentary democracy as well as many UNESCO World Heritage sites.

It is also those same countries that would eventually embark on a journey to the New World and build the foundations of America.

Civilization will make you travel in the past, but also in the present, to show you the enormous steps mankind has made throughout history. Hopefully it will give you awareness of our incredible cultural heritage.

‘The Art of Illustration’ by PBS Arts: Off Book takes a look at the world and art of illustrators, the creative ways that they can relate to their audiences and how their roles continually change throughout the years.

llustrators articulate what a photograph cannot. Using an array of techniques and styles, illustrators evoke stories and meaning in a variety of mediums, from editorial illustration in magazines and newspapers, to comics books, to activist media. And as their tasks over the years have become less informational and more expressive, their individual voice as artists becomes all the more critical and beautiful, revealing an exciting and awe-inspiring age of illustration.

Thanks to Tourism BC and Blackcomb Aviation, last weekend I took an awesome helicopter flight around Garibaldi Park in the Whistler, BC area with landing on a glacier. The tour is called: “Whistler Helicopter Tour Peak Experience” and can be booked directly with Blackcomb Aviation, flights leave from Whistler Municipal Heliport.

Of course there is a lot more to this trip which I have posted about in the previous posts… if you have missed any of them, specially the photos – check out the photo slideshow on Flickr!

It has been a week since we got back from Whistler, BC. I must say that besides helicopter tour of the area park and landing on a glacier, I have totally fallen in love with snowmobiling. It is so much fun that I spent not just one day, but two days riding them up on the Whistler trails up to Crystal Hut at 6,000 feet and back down to the Whistler Village. I highly recommend it for anyone who did not try it before. Here is a photo of me getting ready to head out for an afternoon riding:

    Baguette Table

At the Vienna Design Week Laboratory, artists Gosia and Tomek Rygalik of Studio Rygalik created ‘Baguette Tables,’ tables made of stale bread that were meant to be tossed. It aimed to ‘start a discussion about food waste’ and show that the ‘materials to build from are all around us.’

Food thrown away in Vienna could feed half of the population of Graz… These bread structures were part of a ‘bread experience’ created by Gosia and Tomek Rygalik at the Vienna Design Week Laboratory, where people were surrounded by bread eating bread dishes from bread tables.

    Windows of New York

Each week, New York City-based graphic designer José Guízar illustrates a window that catches his eye for his blog Windows of New York.

A product of countless steps of journey through the city streets, this is a collection of windows that somehow have caught my restless eye out from the never-ending buzz of the city. This project is part an ode to architecture and part a self-challenge to never stop looking up.

Just as I flew in from vacations in Whistler, BC my new, latest 27-inch iMac finally arrived last night. I have ordered it on January 12, 2013 and since it is a brand new model – therefore in high demand – it took just over 4 weeks to get here.

It is absolutely stunning machine, the screen beautiful, it is really fast thanks to the Fusion Drive, which combines both SSD and standard HD. I opted to get trackpad as I already have Magic Mouse which I used with my old iMac. I wasn’t sure if I would like the trackpad for a desktop at first but now after using it for a few hours I am really happy with it. This huge iMac is just 5 mm thin at its edge, very light and indeed you can notice the huge reduction in screen reflection.

Transferring all my data files from the old iMac was pretty simple and fast process as well. I am still working on customizing some of the settings, playing with new one etc. But I should be all up and running later today. I am absolutely in love with this computer now. Here are the configuration details and a few photos:

    Configuration

    • 2.9GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
    • 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM-2X4GB
    • 1TB Fusion Drive
    • NVIDIAGeFrc GTX660M 512M GDDR5
    • MAGIC TRACKPAD
    • Apple WL Keyboard (English)

A fun way to spend an afternoon in Whistler area (Callaghan Valley) is to experience dogsledding on one of the trails outside of the town with the Blackcomb Adventures. I did just that today, for 2.5 hours with a guide and nine dogs (I got to be both a passenger and the driver):

It was a fantastic weather today in Whistler, a perfect day for a Peak2Peak Alpine Experience which spans between Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains providing a 360-degree window into Whistler Blackcomb’s alpine environment…

I took a village gondola just outside of Hilton Hotel where we are staying all the way to the top. From there I took the Peak 2 Peak Gondola which is a tri-cable gondola lift that links Whistler Mountain’s Roundhouse Lodge with Blackcomb Mountain’s Rendezvous Restaurant.  It is the first lift to join the two side-by-side mountains. It holds world records for the longest free span between ropeway towers – 3.03 kilometres (1.88 miles) and highest point above the ground – 436 metres (1,430 feet). The views coupled with amazing weather outside were spectacular, it is a must to-do when you are in Whistler and well worth it!

I stop around 1pm at the Blackcomb Mountain’s Rendezvous Restaurant for quick lunch as well.

Tip: wait for the silver Peak 2 Peak gondola car, which has a glass bottom for extra thrills and view! See a photo below with the glass bottom:

Despite the fact the morning plans had to change, the afternoon made all up… there was something on my bucket list which now I can tick off as “been there and done that” – Blackcomb Mountain Safari. I have spent 3 hours venturing through old growth forests on a snowmobile at dusk to the top of the mountain! Once we reached the Crystal Hut, we warmed up with a hearty soup while watching a sunset over the snow capped peaks of the Coastal Mountain rage thanks to Canadian Snowmobile Adventure who provided us with both the snowmobiles, guide and full snowsuits.

This was my first snowmobile experience and I am totally hooked now! Our guide was super friendly, gave us quick lesson on how to use and handle snowmobiles before we all step on the gas head up to 6000 feet above the sea level. This snowmobile adventure advanture alone makes me want to come back to Whistler! It was so much fun! I highly recommend it to anyone who visits here. All you need is a regular drivers licence and they will show / teach you how have a tone of fun!

Once we reached the Crystal Hut, we watch a spectacular sunset and warmed up with a hot chocolate and hot soup before heading down back to the base. The entire adventure took 3 hours and it is well worth the money! Below is a picture of me and a several photos I took during the mountain safari:

Thanks to Tourism BC for hooking us up with an amazing BC Ski Vacation Gateway! We really appreciate it and looking forward to next few days enjoying everything that the Whistler has to offer! So far it has been a fantastic experience and everyone has been very helpful and accommodating making me want to come back to British Columbia again in the future.

It was our first full day in Whistler British Columbia today, the prearranged plan was to take a helicopter tour at 11:00am from the Whistler Municipal Heliport called Peak Experience. Helicopter Tour by Blackcomb Aviation suppose to take 30 min flying over the gorgeous Garibaldi Park and it mountains. However we had postpone it to another day (most likely Friday or Saturday) for personal reasons. That left us with a wide open morning to explore Whistler Village, including the Olympic Plaza where some of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics events took place. Here are some of the photos as I explored the area, its many shops, restaurants and coffee shops.

It has been a long day so I will be brief… Friend of mine and I took a 5 hour flight this morning out of Toronto to the beautiful city of Vancouver  in British Columbia, Canada with Air Canada. Flight was smooth and on time, the weather was spectacular on departure, but very cold as it is after all the middle of winter in Toronto. We arrived in Vancouver International Airport to a much warmer temperatures and rain; classic winter day on the West Coast. I love airports:

After a quick car rental pick up (Enterprise Car Rental had a super friendly and accommodating staff who helped us pick just the right car for our 200km drive to Whistler), we hit the road. Well, almost… we couldn’t help ourselves so we stopped in the city for quick Fish & Chips lunch, picked up half a dozen cups cakes from a bakery and Starbucks coffee, of course before taking the highway going north of the city to Whistler.

The drive offered some amazing views, unfortunately the rain did not stop and kept us company all the way so I could not snap any photos this time. However we are planning and hoping to do so on the way down / back as the weather supposed to be nothing but sunny on Sunday. Keep your fingers crossed!

Once we arrived in Whistler Village, we have a checked into our fabulous Hilton Whistler Resort and Spa, where rooms are well appointed and huge! The hotel offers outdoor pool  and a hot tub which looked quite busy tonight despite the mix of rain and snow this evening. The staff was very helpful and professional, a pleasure to deal. One of the most surprising things about the this hotel was its location, it is right in the Whistler Village surrounded by shops, stores and restaurants. You don’t need to drive anywhere, as everything is simply right out your front door. I would highly recommend this hotel for this reason alone.

To wrap up the long day, we hang out for a while in the Whistler Village, did some shopping before crushing for the night right now… after all tomorrow is the first full day of fun in Whistler, BC! We have morning Helicopter Tour called Peak Experience and afternoon Blackcomb Mountain Safari… where we will venture through old growth forests on snowmobiles to the Crustal Hut for a soup! We cannot wait for it already… Stay tuned!

Long-exposure images of ISS star trails by Astronaut Don Pettit:

    jsc2012e065055

NASA astronaut Don Pettit shot some really beautiful long-exposure images of star trails while aboard the International Space Station in 2012. Last year, we posted a video by Pettit where he demonstrated antibubbles in space.

He says about his photographic technique:

‘My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure.’

Ten of New York City’s most recognizable buildings are whimsically distorted in Cuban artist Alexandre Arrechea’s sculpture series, ‘No Limits.’ The Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, and other landmarks are shown coiled up like hoses and spinning like tops in metal sculptures that reach 20 feet in height (the sculptures seen here are scale models). Arrechea talks about the series in this short video by Juan Carlos Alom and Armando Suárez Cobián. ‘No Limits’ will be on display on Park Avenue in Manhattan, March 1 to June 9, 2013 in an outdoor installation presented by Magnan Metz Gallery.

Mountains in Motion: The Canadian Rockies from The Upthink Lab on Vimeo.

Mountains in Motion: The Canadian Rockies is an award-winning short film documenting the life of the alpine landscape through time-lapse photography. In an effort to highlight the wildness of these mountain places and how they have inspired explorers of the past, present and future, time-lapse sequences were patiently gathered from exposed summits, by glacial lakes, and under aurora-filled skies. Hours and even months of change lapses in a matter of seconds, providing the viewer with a rare insight into the ever-changing nature of the landscape. Weaving throughout the film are reflections of an early mountaineer, who is deeply moved by his own encounter with the mountains and the revelations of explorers who have come before him. “What is this power that lures me upwards, into the unknown,” he wonders, “that pulls me deeper, despite snow, wind and exhaustion?” Made on a shoestring budget and with entirely volunteer hours, the film brought together artists from two vastly different parts of North America – Banff, Alberta, and Atlanta, Georgia. Strangers at the start, the film team developed strong friendships over the course of production and were united by their common goal of capturing the beauty and essence of a place that inspires them every day. This 100% human-powered film combines advanced time-lapse photography with an original story and musical score to bring the landscape center-stage and offers a thrilling new perspective that re-establishes the Canadian Rockies among the finest mountains in the world.

While the Neoclassic Arc de Triomphe undoubtedly receives plenty of attention from tourists visiting France, this modern version of it symbolizes national humanity, rather than military triumphs, has been a part of the Parisian skyline since 1989. Danish architect Johann Otto von Spreckelsen designed the 110-meter-tall structure that required four years of construction until completion. Although the cubic monument located in the western district called La Défense isn’t easy to capture well because of its gargantuan size and minimalistic color, the featured photographers did a fantastic job of framing images of its architectural detail and surroundings. Explore more fantastic images of Paris: Paris Architecture gallery | Paris group Photos from Martin ARGYROGLOSwadri©simon crasejulienmartlet, and SamFa.
