A new Guinness World Record was set at New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana for the world’s largest human mattress dominoes on February 28, 2012. It took just a few minutes for the 850 participants to tumble over backwards on donated mattresses one-by-one like giant dominoes. “Domino Wizard” Robert Speca designed a “special mattress-domino pattern” for the event was sponsored by La Quinta Inns & Suites. The mattresses, donated by Simmons Bedding Company, will be given to various local charities. The previous record was set in Belgium last year with just 550 people.

The real truth lays the day after… When all the stores put their Halloween candy at 50% off to clear the inventory, I will stock up on chocolate for weeks to come – LOL

Last night, I was on my way to the Distillery District for the ‘Lexus Live at The Distillery’ concert of Canadian rock band “The Stills” (I will post a few shots from it tomorrow when I get around to processing the images), when I briefly stopped by the Toronto’s BusterFest to see the performace of ‘Saurus’ by Dutch street theatre group called Close-Act Theatre. They have scared the hell of out some small kids which was pretty funny. Here are few photos I took while passing by…

    Vernal equinox

    Posted in: Events

Vernal equinox is today, it is a classical name that is direct derivatives of Latin (ver = spring). Or as I call it a much anticipated day after a long winter… ironically it was close to 20C yesterday with beautiful sunshine, today on the first day of spring it is cold outside this morning (3C) and overcast!

Here is a bit of more scientific take on it: An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the Sun being vertically above a point on the Equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. The name “equinox” is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day are approximately equally long. It may be better understood to mean that latitudes +L and -L north and south of the equator experience nights of equal length.

No matter how good or bad the weather may today, I am happy the winter is pretty much done already! The official time when spring arrives today is 5:32pm UTC or 1:32pm EDT! Welcome back, you have been missed dearly!

Line outside The Event, originally uploaded by Leo Laporte.

Can feel the excitement in the air? Just about an hour left to the big Apple event which will mostly likely be all about the new tablet… I will be watching coverage from number of online sources.

Leo Laporte is already outside of the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, CA from where he has just posted this photo showing people lining up.

On Sunday friend of mine and I stoppped over the ‘Radiant Dark – 2010″,which was at CIBC’s Commerce Court in Toronto, Canada. There were couple of really interesting designs and ideas, but over all it was nothing really spectacular. Here are few photos I took from the event:

Last night, I was at the opening reception for Come Up To My Room 2010′ (web site) which is an annual design event at the Gladstone Hotel.

Judging by the turn out, it was a very successful event as the place was packed with visitors last night. For the first time this year, CUTMR joins up with the Toronto International Design Festival  for a 4 day event featuring total of 50 designers, 11 rooms and 14 public space installations that push the limits of art and design. ‘Come Up To My Room’ is already the Gladstone Hotel’s 7th annual alternative design event.

CUTMR invites artists and designers to show us what goes on inside their heads. Coming together in dialogue and collaboration, participants are limited only by their imaginations, making CUTMR one of the most exciting design shows in Toronto. Below you find photo reportage from the event, I will adding also a video version later on.

    CES everywhere

    Posted in: Events

It does not matter where you turn online last night and today, we all drawing in CES coverage from hundreds of blogs, twitter feeds and of course live TV and online TV broadcasts, podcasts and other sources. In fact I have been streaming so much of it, I am going blow my bandwidth limits this month. Unfortunately Canadian ISP Rogers has limits of 60GB of bandwidth a month for their cable customers. Last month, I barely made it under limit with 57.7 GB. I do not think I will lucky this month… I got stop watching so much online streaming video feeds! But it is a special week, CES week!

CES is dominated by the latest and greatest in new HD TV’s, it seems like the newest trend is watching and broadcasting TV in 3D which frankly will take a long time for people embrace. 3D technology has been around for number of years, yet it failed miserably in the movie theatres so far and in my personal opinion, it will fail at the consumer level as well. I do not see myself wearing special glasses just to watch TV at home. Until there is some brilliant, new way of displaying 3D without glasses most people will stay away from it. It just does not seem to be practical for most. Nevertheless the new HD TV’s pack some interesting new concepts, mostly embracing internet content connected to the TV via Wi-Fi. ‘In the near future your TV will be fully connected to the internet with lots of great applications. You may be able to tweet, Skype and use Facebook with family and friends etc. directly from your TV. Streaming HD content to many TV’s across the house using Wi-Fi enable set-top boxes among many other innovative technologies. The future looks like a lot of fun…

In a nutshell the trend seems to be for the current online applications we use daily to start crossing from our computers into consumer electronics like TV’s, Blu-ray players among others. As usual everything is also getting much thinner and lighter as companies advance their designs and pack more in smaller packages. For example some of the new Samsung TV’s are only 6mm thick! It will be interesting to see how many of these products actually make it to our local electronic store and at what prices but there is one thing for sure… technology is changing exponentially.

Today is the winter solstice and the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s all due to Earth’s tilt, which ensures that the shortest day of every year falls around December 21. It also means today is the longest night of the year… Each year there is a Festival of Light celebrated in Toronto’s neighbourhood called Kensignton Market, where hundreds of people come out with lights to mark the return of summer sunlight. I will be going there tonight with my camera and some friends to enjoy giant puppets, parade, lanterns, shadow screens and a 16′ tall fire sculpture… It should be a lot of fun, even if it will be a cold -11C evening as per weather forecast. If you are interested in joining us, here is more information about this event. There are some great photos from the previous years, you can find them on my Flickr here.
