A perfect gift for any Mac geek… love iNecklace by Adafruit:

Long weekend, it is cold and overcast outside so I bake almond biscotti. Here is a classic recipe that I like a lot and use often:

    Ingredients:

    4 cups all-purpose flour
    2 cups sugar
    1 cup almonds, toasted, chopped
    1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
    ½ teaspoon salt
    4 eggs
    2 egg whites
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    ½ teaspoon almond extract

    Directions:

    1) Preheat oven to 350°F.
    2) In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, almonds, baking soda, and salt. In a separate large mixing bowl, mix together eggs, egg whites, vanilla, and almond extract. Pour egg mixture into flour mixture; mix well.
    3) Turn mixture onto lightly floured surface; knead 10 times. Shape into a long roll, flattened to 1-inch thickness.
    4) Place on baking sheet; bake 35 minutes. Remove from oven; cool on a wire rack 10 minutes. Cut into ½-inch diagonal slices; replace onto baking sheet.
    5) Bake 10 minutes, turn over, and bake another 10 minutes. Remove and cool on a wire rack.

I am fully stocked when it comes to almond biscotti for the month of September. Now I am looking forward to my morning with a coffee and biscotti…

The new Helo TC Helicopter is an app-driven toy helicopter, turning your iPhone into a remote. I have always wanted an RC Helicopter, and this one sounds perfect for some fun in the park…

    RC-chopper.jpg

The latest in iPhone- and iPad-specific gadgets, Griffin Techonology’s Helo TC Touch RC Helicopter recently launched to the cheers of tech-savy kids “ages 14 and up” around the world. As a leap forward in app-powered innovations, the “Flight Deck” module attaches to your iOS device and works in conjunction with the Helo TC app to control and direct the helicopter in flight.

    RC-chopper-2.jpg

Although the agile little vehicle is impressive enough, the software is the real winner of the bunch. The iOS-specific controller works with multiple generations of iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. For a familiar remote-control feeling use the joystick controls on your iOS device or switch controls and tilt your device to fly the mini-chopper. When you’ve found a path you like to fly over and over, use the app’s Flight Plan to record up to three routes to fly on demand anytime.

Keeping the twin-rotored helicopter flying high, the craft is constructed of a lightweight metal frame encased in a polycarbonate body; it charges (and recharges) by any USB power source. At just $50, the Helo TC has been in and out of stock since its release, so keep an eye on Griffin Technology online to claim one for yourself, then head to iTunes for the free app download.

    Simply fascinating…

The old school pranksters delight, fake vomit, is still going strong according to novelty puke experts, Stan and Mardi Timm. Vintage and antiques website, Collectors Weekly, published The Inside Scoop on the Fake Barf Industry and got the real deal on fake barf from the Timm brothers. It covers everything from the seedy history behind rubber vomit to presenting some wonderful behind-the-scene shots of the Fun, Inc. warehouse where premier gag vomit, Whoops, is made.

These “cookies” were 500 pieces of fake barf, spread out as far as the Timms’ eyes could see, “curing” under the skylights in the Chicago summer sun. The secret formula is mixed up in a big bucket, and the workers ladle it out, “like you make pancakes,” Stan says. “Each one comes out a little different, of course, but that’s okay.”…“Why mess with a good thing?” Mardi says. “It’s probably one of the greatest gags of all time because it just spanned all these decades and it’s still going. It works well. It’s easy to make, cheap to make, and nobody knows the formula because none of the others look like it. via Collectors Weekly images via Stan and Mardi Timm

Star Wars’ Han Solo in carbonite ice cube tray:

Star Wars Han Solo in Carbonite Ice Cube Tray via ThinkGeek The Han Solo Ice Cube Tray comes with room for six (6) small, 1.75″ Han Solos and one (1) large, 3.5″ Solo. We’re pretty sure that Boba Fett would be happy with just one smuggler on ice but seven would be a serious payday! The silicone on the mold is good down to -40F so don’t try using these on Hoth. They should be fine in your average household freezer though.

    Yummmy!

Scandybars, an ongoing blog that exposes the cross-section of various sweets, uses a variety of techniques to slice up its delicious subjects.

I started with an 8” chef’s knife, but sometimes it was a little too much. I switched to just a regular old hobby knife which works well with most candy bars. However if the insides are super soft and gooey I’ll use fishing line or a high e guitar string.

There is one type of candy bar I have yet to figure out, the brittle ones like Clark or 5th Avenue. They just end up a dusty pile of crumbs.

After they are sliced up, they simply get scanned on a high resolution scanner which captures each scrumptious morsel in detail. These bits of eye candy might be the perfect treat after a Scanwich. via Metafilter photos by Scandybars

    Luxury Dog Mansions:

German company, Best Friend’s HOME, has produced a line of luxury Hundehäuser, the german word for ‘dog houses’. These canine mini mansions come in four styles: Cubix, “following the connotatively Bauhaus architecture”; Fairytale, “two solid shaped turrets and the intentional abdication of windows makes the castle a secure stronghold and cuddly cave”; Alabama, “makes the dog the lord of the manor”; and the Lönneberga, “peaceful and Scandinavian idyllic it creates an atmosphere of complacency and security”. Nearly all pooches are accommodated as the mansions come in a variety of sizes. Best Friend’s HOME was founded by communication designer Doria Keppler and event manager André Heinermann, who wanted a high quality dog house for their own garden and could not find one. More styles will be available in the future. Dogs have a soul – we are convinced. via The Awesomer & ReCraft photos by Best Friend’s HOME

My Roots sling bag after a good  5 years run has finally moved on to the bag retirement community last week. It has served me very well almost on a daily basis, travelled across many continents carrying anything from cameras and lens to groceries. I am so accustom to the form and small, yet useful factor that I had to find similar replacement as soon as possible since in the summer time I use this type of bag daily. I need it to carry small items, water bottle, sometimes an umbrella with me. I take it with me when I bike or I am simply out and about in the city during the day.

Mountain Co-op Equipment seems to never fail me with their huge, well designed assortment of products. Last night, after checking their web site and reading some reviews I have opted out for this new small Pod Sling Pack. It has got everything I need and more, it small yet big enough for my needs and you cannot beat the $21 price tag! Love it…

Meaghan Mountford of the food blog, The Decorated Cookie, describes herself as “somewhere between writer and cookie decorator”. With her latest post, she incorporates both skills quite well. While perfecting the process of making the ultimate summer beverage at home, iced coffee, she bakes up these wonderful chocolate-y coffee bean-shaped cookies to accompany her icy drink. Although the first batch of cookies didn’t have any coffee in them, it is a planned addition for future ones. photos by The Decorated Cookie

I love this concept… Flower Grenades, a smashable clay seed-filled grenades:

Flower bombing is now made fun and easy! With the motto, Throw and Grow, the Flower Grenade originally began as a 2008 concept piece called BioGrenade in biodegradable paper from designer Tony Minh Nguyen. UK’s Snowhome, a design retailer, began creating them in smashable unfired clay with manufacturer and distributor suckUK. While the grenades may unintentionally promote hippie vandalism, they are available to purchase at Snowhome.

Gardening’s gone guerilla – You’ve seen them, you may have looked away, but you’ve seen them. Those forgotten areas of the estate, left to fall apart and fall into disrepair. The municipal scrubland where nothing can grow… Or can it? Turn the concrete jungle into a wilderness with our compacted wild flower seed grenades. via Technabob photo by Snowhome

Awesome idea! I could use a slice of it just about now…

Food blogger, Vicky McDonald of Stasty, created this motley Battenberg cake as a tribute to Ernö Rubik, inventor of 1980s iconic toy puzzle Rubik’s Cube. By providing the recipe and detailed assembly directions on her blog, McDonald assures there will be no enigma on how to make this cake at home.

Hungarian Ernö Rubik invented the Rubik’s cube in 1974. He was born on the 13th of July, 1944. Myself and my other half set about making a birthday cake, worthy of the great man, himself. Battenberg cakes are constructed of rectangular pieces of alternatively coloured Victoria sponge cake, sandwiched together by jam and held together with walls of Marzipan…It took a little planning to get it right, however I think it might just be a worthy birthday treat. I’m not sure if Ernö has a sweet tooth but hopefully he might enjoy this puzzling cake.

As it turns out, he did. Mr. Rubik himself emailed the cake’s creator to say that liked it. photos by Vicky McDonald

Wow, it amazing people come up so many different things to get high… I guess alcohol should be part of it too as it is equally as bad when it comes to impairing your ability to use judgement. Either way it is interesting vintage piece…

Well before Nancy Reagan was pushing the “Just Say No” anti-drugs campaign in the 1980s to the nation’s youth, a company named Winston Products for Education was creating Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Identification Kits for schools, scouting organizations and law enforcement agencies to get the word out back in the late 1960s.

There is little information to be found on this identification kit but the Wiley Online Library points to the following description of New Instructional Materials from the June 1969 Journal of School Health:

The Dangerous Drugs—Identification Kit contains harmless facsimiles of the more commonly abused dangerous drugs. The Kit was designed to be used primarily as an instructional aid in educational and training programs directed toward combating the existing narcotics and dangerous drugs problem. It consists of a plastic container which is transparent and durable. Plainly visible within the container are facsimiles of amphetamines and barbituates, reproduced with exacting fidelity in terms of color, size, shape, and other distinguising characteristics.

This particular kit is part of my personal collection and I have been told, though I cannot prove conclusively, that Winston Products for Education was backed by R.J. Reynolds’ Winston cigarettes brand.

I love those adorable 60s-era Peel Microcars which are still world’s smallest cars:

Peel Microcars were ultra tiny cars built in the UK in the 1960s. Two main models were produced in limited numbers: the two passenger Trident and one passenger P50. At just 54 inches in length, the P50 remains the world’s smallest production car. The Peel brand has recently been revived by two entrepreneurs who plan to resume manufacture of the microcars. Ericofon aka Cobra Phone, An Innovative Telephone Design by Ericsson which I totally love it. They hard to find, often pop up here and there at the antique markets from time to time. We there is a lot nostalgia old those vintage pieces, it would be nice to see them revived.

Designed by Sweden’s Ericsson Telephone Company in the late 1940s, the Ericofon or the Cobra Phone,  was originally designed for hospital use due to its ease of use, according to mega-collector’s Richard Rose’s Ericofon website. Minnesota-based Rose has a collection of 90 vintage Ericofon telephones including a special edition gold-plated one. He also collects telephone advertisements and has a huge inventory of vintage telephones for sale. This generally plastic, all-in-one stand up phone is highly collectible and holds a place in the Architecture and Design section of New York City’s Museum of Modern Art. photos & images via Ericofon.

    neighbor-doorknob-hanger

Candy Chang created a set of clever Neighbor Doorknob Hangers for the Neighborhoods issue of GOOD Magazine.

The Neighbor Doorknob Hanger is a simple, double-sided sign that provides a friendly platform for residents in dense quarters to offer and request things at everyone’s convenience. One side says “Please Disturb” and makes space for you to list offerings and choose how you prefer to be contacted – a knock at specific times that are good for you, by phone, or by email. The other side of the doorknob hanger says “Can I borrow?” and provides the same format for requesting things and resources. Think of it as an invitation, a validated request, or a low-tech status update for your door, so we can share more resources without interrupting each other at a bad time! via The Presurfer

These are beautiful… I still buy journals for myself each year to make notes as needed, these cork notebooks look really nice:

    MR-cork1.jpg MR-cork2.jpg

We recently came across the meticulously constructed Landmade Cork Journal by Michael Roger Press, and not only does the material give way to a beautiful pattern, but the half-century-old stationer uses the traditional Smyth sewn binding technique. Hand-sewing the pages together (instead of gluing) gives the notebooks binding extra strength and allows it to open flat—two important features for anyone who uses a notebook regularly.

    MR-cork3.jpg

Made with acid-free paper, each piece is proudly crafted in limited runs at their New Jersey factory. By producing notebooks and paper goods in small batches, they retain the flexibility to innovate and implement new ideas into their line. They also offer the option to personalize nearly all their products with a custom die-cast stamp.

Each journal is completely unique by nature’s design, made with natural, sustainably-harvested cork. Sold in two sizes ($10-17) and lined or unlined, Michael Roger Press products sell online and at specialty stationers.

    Incredible automobiles:

Masterpieces of Ralph Lauren’s legendary car collection on display in Paris

Starting today seventeen of the world’s finest classic sports cars from Ralph Lauren’s legendary personal collection will be on show at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. ‘The Art of the Automobile’ features select cars from the designer’s prolific stockpiles, one of the most extensive in the world.

Acting as a visual timeline of the evolution of European automobile design through the 20th Century, the cars on display—among them Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Bentley, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Porsche and Ferrari—are among the most exceptional in the world and have been infrequently shown to the public. Each one, all created between the 1930s and the 1990s, stands as a masterpiece of both technological innovation and impeccable design.

The result is a show of some of the rarest and most beautiful cars by the greatest names in automobiles, including four (a ’31 Alfa Romeo Monza 8C 2300; a Jaguar XKSS from 1956/1958; a ’60 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Scaglietti and a ’64 Ferrari 250 LM) that have never been exhibited before.

To commemorate the exhibition, a limited run book features each car, its historical and technical significance and an explanation by Lauren himself on what guides his passion for car collection. The book will also showcase many of the same images seen here, all exceptionally shot by renowned automobile photographer Michael Furman.

The show runs through 28 August 2011 and is open to the public for a small fee of €9.

    Very clever design!

Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art store sells this stainless steel cocktail shaker that comes disguised as a graffiti-writer’s spraycan — $20 for non-members, $18 for members. I’m guessing that there’s a good reason for the flared shape of a traditional shaker that you lose out on by opting for this, but it’s still a great novelty for your rec-room bar, to be shelved next to the peeing boy liquor dispenser and the novelty Bols liqueur bottle with the waistcoat and the monocle. Kitchen and Entertaining (via Super Punch)
