Check out the review of Instadesk, a $1.99 Mac App which bring Instagram to your Mac. It is available through Mac App Store:

Instagram is a widely popular, but unusual, app. It has had a huge success on the iPhone, continually improving over the past few years, but you can’t really browse your pictures or view your profile if you are away from your iOS device. The support for desktop and web versions of Instagram is pretty much non-existent from the developer.

Fortunately, the API of the service is open to any developer who wants to take advantage of it. This gives people a chance to build on the huge community behind Instagram, and make it easy to browse images from locations other than the iPhone app. Today we’ll be reviewing Instadesk – an app that aims to do just that!

One of my favourite little Mac App for quick image editing and manipulation is Acorn – The Image Editor for Humans from Flying Meat. I use it mostly for editing images for my blog which are associated with some of the blog posts. Its simple, yet powerful interface and tools are perfect choice do minor editing on the fly. Yesterday they have released a new version called Acorn 3 and here is a list of what’s new in the latest update:

    • Layer Styles - Apply non-destructive effects to your layers. Try things out knowing you can always change your mind later on.
    • Multistop Live Gradients - Are two color gradients not enough for you? With Acorn’s multistop gradients, you have infinite rainbows at your fingertips.
    • Rotating Text and Shapes - Ask and you shall receive. Turn your text and shapes upside down and every which way. You’ve got it in Acorn 3.
    • Quickmask - Make your selections like a pro. Quickmask will allow you to zoom in and edit your selections like never before.
    • Instant Alpha - Remove backgrounds and other unwanted pixels from your image with a flick of the wrist.
    • New Filters - Inner shadow, emboss, circles and lines, we’ve got some great new filters in Acorn you’re sure to enjoy.
    • Vector Chops - In addition to being able to rotate your shapes, you can now convert text to bezier paths, add and subtract points, and have your edges snap to pixel boundaries.
    • PSD Import and Export - Improved support for loading PSD images, and for exporting your images as layered Photoshop files.

One of my favourite blogs AppStorm has a great post today called: Mac Software for Advanced OS X Users: 70 Apps listing a some great and very useful Mac Apps, some of them are even available for free. I use a few of them already but there are others I may consider adding in the future.

These apps are a mix of free and paid for software, and in order to provide you with as much information as possible, we’ve included multiple apps for similar tasks if available. This list is by no means complete, but it should help you to unlock some more of your Mac’s great potential!

Mark your calendars for tomorrow – January 20th, 2010! Indie relief is coming…

Developers of indie Mac software put together a large selection of their products of which the entire proceeds tomorrow will be donated to Haitian relief. This is a very good idea and a very worthy cause. I have a several pieces of the software listed on the site, but there are some I was thinking about getting but never got around to do it. Tomorrow is day I will make my contribution by getting them finally and knowing that money is going to help someone else in need is an additional bonus.

If you are a Mac user, please check out the web site today to see if you are interested in any of the software and make your purchase tomorrow to help those in Haiti!

If you have a Mac computer at home, you most likely have an iPhone as well and if you have both of them Airlock App may be just what you want to add to your computer. Airlock allows your Mac to lock itself based on your iPhone proximity in relation to the computer.  Airlock App determines whether you are close by using the Bluetooth signal from your iPhone. When you go out of range with your iPhone, your Mac locks its screen automatically. When you’re back in range, the computer greets you by unlocking its screen. But there is more, you may also customize Airlock to perform specific actions as you come and go, like logging-in or out of Adium or iChat, taking your Mail accounts offline or closing or opening your Safari browser among all others. It is a very cool App for your Mac!

I am all for customizing and making things more personal. Especially when it comes my computers. Since most people have their Mac – either an iMac or MacBook password protected, the first screen they see after starting up is the login screen. This screen contains the default image of Mac OS X, which frankly I have never been a big fan of… Loginox App is an application which lets you easily customize the login screen by changing this default images with any other Jpg you would want use instead.

    Clean My Mac

    Posted in: Mac Apps

I love my iMac, I am happy with my iMac, I use my iMac like I have never used any other personal computer in the past. I continue downloading and installing new Apps, experimenting with new tools and stress this machine as much as anyone could. It is my main machine at home and over the years I have added and remove a lot software. I have never re-installed Mac OS X since I bought it couple of years ago so obviously it does not run as smoothly or as fast as it used to… I am not terribly surprised by it since I have not really done too much maintenance on it to improve the performance. If you are a Windows user, in most cases you simply have not much choice but to re-instally the OS from time to time, Mac is different…
