On the Sunday night after Ash Wednesday a procession begins of people carrying burning bundles of pinewood chips (called Chienbäse, the Alemannic German for ‘pinewood besom’) through the medieval town center of Liestal, Switzerland, entering through the city gate from the south. In more recent decades the Chienbäse have been augmented with carts carrying bonfires, with flames often reaching as high as the houses. — Wikipedia If you enjoyed the above photos, check out other fiery photos from this year’s Chienbäse festival.Photos from lycienjantos, justanotherperspective, Nutrimotion, klaeui, and Toni Birrer.

Long-exposure images of ISS star trails by Astronaut Don Pettit:
NASA astronaut Don Pettit shot some really beautiful long-exposure images of star trails while aboard the International Space Station in 2012. Last year, we posted a video by Pettit where he demonstrated antibubbles in space.
He says about his photographic technique:
‘My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure.’

While the Neoclassic Arc de Triomphe undoubtedly receives plenty of attention from tourists visiting France, this modern version of it symbolizes national humanity, rather than military triumphs, has been a part of the Parisian skyline since 1989. Danish architect Johann Otto von Spreckelsen designed the 110-meter-tall structure that required four years of construction until completion. Although the cubic monument located in the western district called La Défense isn’t easy to capture well because of its gargantuan size and minimalistic color, the featured photographers did a fantastic job of framing images of its architectural detail and surroundings. Photos showing the beauty and diversity of seeds, created using a scanner:

In addition to being passionate about image making, photographer Svjetlana Tepavcevic is also an avid collector of seeds. After finding and collecting a new specimen, Tepavcevic creates a highly-detailed high-resolution photo of the seed using an ordinary flatbed scanner. The resulting images form a project titled Means of Reproduction.
Tepavcevic often exhibits the images in extremely large prints, some measuring upwards of 5 feet in length.
Regarding the meaning behind the images, Tepavcevic writes,
Compared to large and complex life forms that emerge from them, seeds and their vessels are much smaller and seemingly simpler. The cone of a giant Sequoia tree, for example, is hardly bigger than an egg, its seeds the size of oat flakes. But, they are just as infinitely complex and eternally mysterious as anything in nature. As I began to create the images, the key idea was transformation. The small had to be transformed into large, the micro into macro. I wanted the images to brim with energy, to focus on the detail, and to reveal the vast variety of forms the objects can take on.
For me, these objects are a testament to life’s enormous resilience. Many of the seeds and pods in the images are from city-dwelling trees that seem to grow out of asphalt. They remind me: however tough the circumstances, life’s overwhelming purpose is to reproduce itself. They also remind me of the massive complexities in nature, all around us, complexities that remain invisible to us.

You can find more of these images over on Tepavcevic’s website. At the time of this writing, there are 32 images in the collection. Image credits: Photographs by Svjetlana Tepavcevic and used with permission

The James Bond film franchise reached $1 billion in the international box office with the latest film ‘Skyfall’ at the end of 2012. Much like the previous films, Mr. Bond outwits foes in an array of eye-catching shooting locations, and one particular Japanese island stands out for its shabby condition: Hashima Island (端島; meaning ‘Border Island’). The gem of urban exploration also goes by other names, including Gunkanjima (Battleship Island in Japanese) and Ghost Island. According to Wikipedia, coal mining was the basis of its industrialization that began in the late 1800s. But Japan’s energy demand switched to petroleum, resulting in the eventual abandonment of the concrete-packed island in 1974. Explore more of the ruins from this location at these Flickr destinations: Battleship Island gallery | Battleship Island:軍艦島 group | Hashima Island on Places: Nagasaki Prefecture. For her project Sworn Virgins of Albania, photographer Jill Peters visited to the mountain villages of northern Albania to capture portraits of ‘burneshas,’ or females who have lived their lives as men for reasons related to their culture and society.
Many of the women assumed their male identities from an early age as a way to avoid the old codes that governed the tribal clans, which stated that women were the property of their husbands. Peters explains,
The freedom to vote, drive, conduct business, earn money, drink, smoke, swear, own a gun or wear pants was traditionally the exclusive province of men. Young girls were commonly forced into arranged marriages, often with much older men in distant villages. As an alternative, becoming a Sworn Virgin, or ‘burnesha’ elevated a woman to the status of a man and granted her all the rights and privileges of the male population. In order to manifest the transition such a woman cut her hair, donned male clothing and sometimes even changed her name. Male gestures and swaggers were practiced until they became second nature. Most importantly of all, she took a vow of celibacy to remain chaste for life. She became a ‘he’. This practice continues today but as modernization inches toward the small villages nestled in the Alps, this archaic tradition is increasingly seen as obsolete. Only a few aging Sworn Virgins remain.
Thus, Peters wanted to capture this fading tradition before it disappeared forever. She also writes that she learned a great deal from her interactions with her subjects and their communities:
I learned that the Burrnesha are well respected within their communities. They possess an indescribable amount of strength and pride, and value their family honor above all else. Their absolute transition is wholly accepted, posited and taken without question by the people among whom they live. But most surprising, is they have very few regrets for the great deal they have sacrificed.

Strempel visits his photo spots early in the morning, when a blank of fog is hanging over the treetops. Photography: Motion by Bill Wadman
Posted in: Photography
Blurry long-exposure portraits showing dancers in motion:

For his project titled Motion, Brooklyn, New York-based photographer Bill Wadman shot portraits of dancers with a slow shutter speed in order to capture their movements through motion blur. The resulting photographs look like a strange fusion of photography and painting.
Here’s what Wadman tells us about how the project came about:
‘Motion’ started as an experiment, a departure from my traditional and conceptual portrait work. I had attended a lecture by old-school sports photographer Marvin Newman where he showed a slow shutter speed image he had taken of a boxer with his saturated glove smearing across the frame as he punched his opponent. I was inspired by the imagery and idea of capturing motion in a dynamic way, so started experimenting with long exposure photography.
My initial plan was to use a broad cross-section of subjects, specifically people who move as part of their job. Athletes, construction workers, cooks, etc. were all on my initial list of potential shoots. However, my first experiment was with a professional dancer and the results were incredible, so I decided all the subjects should people whose use of motion is their living. During the following months I had sessions with nine different dancers.
The entire series was shot using a Canon 5D Mark II and a 35mm f/1.4 lens. The resulting photographs were cropped to a 4×5 ratio during post.
Each of the images is a simple exposure taken in a very dark room, with a single soft light source shining down on the dancers from above. Wadman used a 3-second shutter speed with his lens stopped down to f/11 (to prevent the depth-of-field from being too shallow, since he was aiming for motion blur rather than out-of-focus blur).

This project is like a non-flash version of photographer Ben Von Wong’s dancer photo behind-the-scenes that he shared here last month. You can buy some of these photographs in the form of a print or a photo book through Wadman’s online store. P.S. We interviewed Wadman back in 2009 regarding his 365 Portraits project. Dazzling underwater photographs of fish, dolphins, birds and people:

Hong Kong-based photographer Alexander Safonov shoots incredible underwater photographs showing scenes teeming with marine life. A software engineer by trade, he obtained a diving license back in 2002 and began to experiment with underwater photography starting in 2004. In 2006 he picked up his first DSLR. While he has traveled to locations all across the world for his images (places like the Cocos Island, Fiji, Galapagos and Raja Ampat), his favorite destination is the annual sardine run off the coast of South Africa, where massive balls of sardines float around like clouds of meat, and sharks and dolphins congregate to eat. Safonov’s photographs often capture wide angle views of these frenzied feedings.

He writes that any photographer looking to photograph underwater predators should seek out one of these ‘bait balls’, since you have a good chance of having more up-close encounters during a short dive than ‘the average diver sees during a life time.’ Here’s his description:
What is the sardine run all about? It is huge school of sardines, some estimate 15 km long, migrating along the Wild Coast every year at winter for the reasons not completely understood by science yet. The school usually stays pretty deep, in the 40-60m range.
Dolphins are responsible for separating small portions of these gigantic schools into smaller ones called bait balls and pushing them to the shallow water where they are more comfortable with hunting. Various species of sharks take advantage of this opportunity presented to them by dolphins, since it is believed that moving pattern and density of big school disorients them, making feeding on the big school difficult — this is one of the reasons why bait fish always instinctively groups together then threatened.
Birds, usually covering big distances in the search of solitary fish in shallow water arrive in huge flocks and take advantage of these generous opportunities too. Game fish, like tuna and sailfish join this frenzy. Ultimately there are bryde’s whales, capable of feeding on sardines, too. Result is unique hunting collaboration and feeding competition between different species, which is not only one of the most spectacular natural events on the planet but also puzzle box full of unanswered questions for the science.

Photos of exploding chili peppers using firecrackers and a sound trigger:

For a recent assignment for Men’s Health magazine, photographer Adam Voorhes was tasked with creating photos of chili peppers exploding. He decided to stuff fresno chilis with tiny small fireworks to create the explosions. Obtaining the fireworks proved to be a challenge, but luckily it was a challenge that was soon met with an unexpected solution:
We did have the technical hurdle of acquiring fire crackers off season. I mentioned the idea to my cousin Sterling who was having drinks at my house. He asked how many I needed. Just one pack should be plenty, I said. Oh no problem, he told me, I have a bunch of fireworks in the trunk. You have fireworks in the trunk of your car? In Texas? In the heat? Yeah, he explained, you never know when you’ll need some.
Once he had the fireworks in hand, Voorhes carried out the shoot with his nephew Miles (a soldier who recently returned from Afghanistan) as his assistant.
He used a Arca-Swiss medium format view camera with a PhaseOne P65+ digital back, which was triggered using a Mumford Time Machine and sound trigger mic. In other words, the camera snapped a photograph at the moment when the sound of the explosion reached it.
Here’s what you’ll get if you do what’s described above:

Photographs of post-war churches and their non-traditional designs:

French photographer Fabrice Fouillet is interested in churches built after World War II. Specifically, he’s fascinated with how many of the buildings created in the 50s, 60s, and 70s deviated from architectural traditions built up over the centuries, and instead took on fresh new looks and radically different styles. Fouillet has traveled across Europe and the world in search of these churches, which were looked down upon when they were built but praised for their looks now. His project is titled Corpus Christi.
In his statement regarding the series, Fouillet writes,
Corpus Christi highlights the architectural aesthetic of the new places of worship and their hymn to minimalism, which has represented a genuine creative inspiration in modern religious architecture.
[...] This work also insists that many unique interiors structures could be made for the same type of institution.
The photographs are all taken from the same perspective. Fouillet positions his camera near the back of the sanctuary, and then captures a wide-angle photograph that includes both the pews below and the roof above. All of the resulting photographs captures the beautiful vastness of the spaces.

German photographer Jakob Wagner is a master of nighttime cityscape photography. For his series titled Nightscapes, traveled to various countries all over the world, shooting gorgeous images of urban environments that are teeming with points of light from buildings and cars. Wagner has traveled to countries including the United States, France, China, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.
When photographing each city, Wagner spends hours scouting the environment and choosing just the right vantage point for a photograph. He then sets up his tripod and captures a long-exposure photograph of the scene. Some of his images offer a relatively close-up look of the cityscape, highlighting certain skyscrapers and famous features, while others observe the cities from a distance, depicting them as a field of lights covering the landscape beneath clouds and around landforms.

You can find more of Wagner’s work over on his website. P.S. How many of the cities here can you recognize? Leave a comment with your answers. Image credits: Photographs by Jakob Wagner and used with permission

Photo enthusiast Tyler Casson shot the above photographs by visiting the same spot on the edge of Lake Springfield in Illinois over the course of one year and snapping a photograph using his iPhone. The project is titled ‘The Four Seasons of the Bush.’
The photographs received a good deal of attention in late October after Casson shared it on Reddit. The image quickly hit the front page of the social news website, and other users began submitting their own remixes of the project:
DrunkDrSeuss took the photos and overlaid them on top of each other:

Photographs of clothing and accessories frozen in large blocks of ice:

Fashion company Pierre Cardin did a marketing campaign earlier this year that revolved around the slogan: ‘Simply Cool.’ It enlisted the help of Brazilian art director Cláudia Xavier and luxury still life photographer Norimich Inoguchi for a series of advertising photographs. The creatives decided to convey that ‘it’s cool to wear Pierre Cardin’ in a very literal way: they photographed various clothing items and accessories frozen into large blocks of ice. It took 3-4 days to freeze each item in blocks of ice weighing roughly 300 pounds. The blocks were created using special machines that constantly circulated water around the blocks as they formed, in order to remove any impurities in the water and imperfections in the ice. The blocks are then brought into the studio, where they’re carved into cubes and then either smoothed out or distressed. Here are some more photographs that resulted from the shoots:

A creative light painting photograph that makes sparks look like rain:

After seeing an online tutorial on steel wool light painting, photographer Simon Berger found a friend to model for him and went out to try his hand at the technique. After some initial success, he started brainstorming creative ideas that he hadn’t seen before. The result of the brainstorming was this stunning shot that makes the sparks from a burning piece of steel wool look like rain falling on an umbrella. Here’s the original color (and uncropped) version of the photograph, which features Berger’s brave friend Martin:

Berger tells us that his photographs use ordinary steel wool that’s set ablaze for the sparks. He sets his Canon 5D Mark III at an aperture of f/8, an ISO of 100-200, and a shutter speed of 15-20 seconds. Here are some of Berger’s other steel wool light painting experiments:

If you decide to try your hand at steel wool light painting, be sure that you protect both your eyes and your camera’s eye from the sparks. Wear goggles, and put a cheap filter on your lens to avoid getting molten metal on the front element.
