The Surreal gravity-defying photographs of Philippe Ramette:

    Crisis of casualness

    Irrational contemplation

Rational exploration of the undersea : irrational walk

Between 2003 and 2006, French conceptual artist Philippe Ramette created a series of gravity-defying photographs that show him in seemingly impossible poses. These illusions were not created digitally as Ramette explains to The Guardian in 2009, “You see a tension in my hands, my red face is far from serene as the blood rushes to it, my suit is ruffled.” Web Urbanist has images and a brief explanation of how Ramette’s illusion is accomplished. via Web Urbanist photos by Philippe Ramette

Long exposure photos of people tossing and turning at night:

Hamilton College assistant art professor Robert Knight has a project titled “Sleepless” that consists of ghostly long exposure photographs of people tossing and turning throughout the night. The project was inspired by his experience with insomnia, which set in after he and his wife became parents for the first time. After documenting his own sleep movements, he began documenting other people’s sleep as well. To create the images, he carefully calculates proper exposure based on the dim lights in the room, and then asks the subject to open the shutter before they go to bed and then close it before the sun comes up.

Awesome idea for a photo series! Love these type of projects:

Mimicry” is a photo project by Dutch photographers Ilse Leenders and Maurits Gisen that’s based around the idea of uniformity. They write,

The inspiration of the series Mimicry came from the uniformity of the human beings. People from whom the identity is missing and those who are inconspicuous in our society. Just like animals they adapt to their environment. Visually in this series it is shown by the use of similar costumes, position and sex.

Abstract images created by tearing and layering photographs:

Raleigh, North Carolina-based artist Scott Hazard creates abstract images by tearing shapes into multiple prints of the same photograph, and then stacking the images on top of each other. He uses the technique to create things such as smoke, clouds, and portals in walls. He calls the project “Photo Constructs”.

    Very neat idea…

After his Beijing studio was destroyed in 2005, artist Liu Bolin (AKA “The Invisible Man”) began a project titled “Hiding in the City” that show him blending into various locations around Beijing. The photographs aren’t Photoshopped — Bolin carefully has his body painted to blend in with each landscape. TIME writes,

Each image requires meticulous planning and execution: as both artist and performer, Bolin directs the photographer on how to compose each scene before entering the frame. Once situated, he puts on his Chinese military uniform, which he wears for all of his Invisible Man photographs, and, with the help of an assistant and painter, is painted seamlessly into the scene. This process can sometimes take up to ten hours with Bolin having to stand perfectly still. Although the end result of Bolin’s process is the photograph, the tension between his body and the landscape is itself a manifestation of China’s incredible social and physical change. [#]

Bolin’s work will be on display at Eli Klein Fine Art Gallery in New York City through May 11 in an exhibition titled Liu Bolin: Lost in Art. More of his photos can be seen over on the gallery’s websiteLiu Bolin (via TIMEImage credits: Photographs by Liu Bolin. Courtesy of Eli Klein Fine Art Gallery

Photographs captured over years with an open camera shutter:

German photographer Michael Wesely has spent decades working on techniques for extremely long camera exposures — usually between two to three years. In the mid-1990s, he began using the technique to document urban development over time, capturing years of building projects in single frames. In 1997, he focused his cameras on the rebuilding of Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, and in 2001 he began photographing the Museum of Modern Art’s ambitious renovation project. He uses filters and extremely small apertures to reduce the amount of light striking the film, creating unique images that capture both space and time.

Wesley says that his technique could be used for even longer exposures of ten, twenty, or even forty years. You can learn more about Wesley and view his list of exhibitions over on his website, or purchase the book he created from this Open Shutter project. Image credits: Photographs by Michael Wesely

Amateur photographer documents the faces of addiction in the Bronx:

Based in New York, 46-year-old Chris Arnade is a banker by trade and a passionate photographer. While those attributes may seem pretty commonplace, it’s Arnade’s subjects that make his work stand out: Arnade focuses his “hobby” on sharing the faces and stories of drug addicts in the Bronx. He writes,

I post people’s stories as they tell them to me. I am not a journalist, I don’t verify, just listen.

Its very easy to simply run with your crowd, to not explore the amazing diversity and perspectives that are offered. It’s also very easy to ignore others. By not looking, by not talking to them, we can often fall into constructing our own narrative that affirms our limited world view. What I am hoping to do, by allowing my subjects to share their dreams and burdens with the viewer and by photographing them with respect, is to show that everyone, regardless of their station in life, is as valid as anyone else. [#]
