A darkly funny but nightmarish scenario, a man wakes up in hospital with a group of sound artists soundtracking his life. Mr Foley is an award winning short film directed by Dublin directing duo Mike Ahern & Enda Loughman aka D.A.D.D.Y. The film has been on the festival circuit for a while but has just premiered online for all to see, YAY!

Argentinian photographer Alejandro Chaskielberg started as a photojournalist before turning to documentary photography and developing his trademark style of shooting under moonlight and using strobes and long exposures to illuminate his subjects. His portrait subjects are asked to remain motionless for long periods of time as he photographs them using a large format film camera. He recently applied his style to a series on residents of Northern Kenya — a location that’s typically photographed under the harsh midday sun.

Design: The 1914 Aerodinamica Prototype
Posted in: Design
The 1914 Aerodinamica prototype, an early aerodynamic car, this is really one of the coolest things I have seen in a while!
The 1914 A.L.F.A. 40/60 HP Aerodinamica Prototype was a very early attempt at creating an aerodynamic automobile. Thanks to its teardrop shape, the Aerodinamica could attain a top speed of 86 mph from its 70 horsepower engine. The car was designed by Marco Ricotti of Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Castagna. It was based on the A.L.F.A. 40/60 HP, a road and race car from the company that would eventually become Alfa Romeo. via Retronaut & Car Styling photo 2 by John Lamm, all others via shorey.net

Lickable Wallpaper in Lick-able Lift
Posted in: Photography
Lickable wallpaper installed in a London elevator… interesting and fun idea, as long as there is only one person licking it, otherwise it sounds a little gross to me!
Mischief PR and McVitie’s have teamed up to create the world’s first lickable wallpaper made of 1,325 McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes (cookies). Inspired by Willy Wonka, the wallpaper was installed in an elevator which they are calling a “Lick-able Lift.” The elevator can be found in the offices at Engine, a London-based communications company.
1,325 Jaffa Cakes and four weeks of painstaking planning cumulated in this lift that can take its passengers to heaven (Floor 16) and back.
Update: On the hygiene point – once a Jaffa Cake is licked they’re removed by the bell boy (out of shot) so no-one else can lick them. We don’t want a Jaffa Cake induced epidemic on our hands!

Vela exercise bike doubles as sculpture
Posted in: Cycling, Design
Exercise bikes in general are one of the most unattractive things anything could put inside of their home… they usually below deep down, below the ground in a basement if you must have one. But not Vela exercise bike, this beautifully design piece can function as modern art sculpture when not in use. I would love to have one of these…

Lunar Design might have chanced on a potential hit with the Vela exercise bike, where this stationary exercise bike certainly does not look like one at all. After all, when you first took a look at it above, what came across your mind? Meant to debut at the 2012 Milan Furniture Fair in Italy, the whole idea of the Vela exercise bike was to transform it’s design to look like a piece of functional decorative art in your home apart from being an exercise machine which will burn away all those excess calories.

Video: Waves by Daniel Palacios
Posted in: Video
‘Waves’ utilizes a basic construction of a long piece of elastic string and two motors to visualize the presence of people close to the installation. The string between the two motorized chambers reacts to the people presence and movements, it twirls to produce a sine-wave simulation that eloquently resembles both the digitization of real-time sound waves and patterns of flow and connectivity found in natural systems. The simple act of making the “invisible” visible can produce profound effects in both our understanding of the world around us and the close relationship we have to the natural and built environment that we occupy daily. Although the project may seem like a simple visualization of intangible forms, it nevertheless connects to our visceral side by creating unique sound output and striking visual stimuli that engage with “persistence of vision” and our connection to the spaces we occupy and their sonic and electromagnetic inhabitants. The mesmerizing kaleidoscopic patterns found on cathedral ceilings, I love every one of these images. I was lucky enough to shoot similar images with a super-wide lens when traveling around European cathedrals. Looking up always amazed me how beautiful these type vaults are…

Vaults is a photo project by photographer David Stephenson that documents the beautiful kaleidoscopic patterns found on the ceilings of ancient houses of worship.

Video: Asylum by Drew Geraci
Posted in: Video
Take a dark journey into the forgotten, where time stands still. The paint has peeled off the walls and the only occupants are the souls of those left behind. This is the Asylum. Opened in the early 1920s, the Asylum closed down and was abandoned decades ago. Rooms remain untouched – left as they were when the last of the employees departed. These buildings stand as a testament to the horrors and miss treatment that patients had to endure during the time of its operation. Our 7 month journey into the Asylum led us on many adventures; from dodging security vehicles, ghostly figures and even a meth head. This is no place for the faint of heart. Asbestos blanketed every room we entered like new winter snow, so shooting was sometimes difficult. This project is a combination of traditional HDR, tone-mapping, and standard time-lapse techniques. With the use of the Dynamic Perception Stage Zero and a Merlin head, we were able to capture the grit and the grime of this wondrous place, like it had never been captured before. Every single frame in this production is a still photograph, no video was shot. It took nearly 35,000 individual frames over 7 months to complete this project.
