Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon, spreading on the slope between the Castle of Lisbon and the Tejo river. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning fountains or baths. It contains many important historical attractions, with many Fado bars and restaurants. It is full of old homes on tiny cobbled streets, where it feels like the world stop decades ago. Most homes are very colourful and often seen with laundry drying outside which add to the colour palette of those streets.
