While nowadays, redscale film can be bought premade, it is based on a simple technique: In essence, photographic film is reversed and wound upside-down into an empty film canister. When used, it is exposed from the wrong side creating beautifully tinted images with colors ranging from maroon, to red, to organge, to yellow. You can find more beautiful shots in our Redscale groups, or in a tag search for redscale+film. Photos from Trapacozgecancelia gómez de villavedóncherryrae.slimmer_jimmerraquel fialho, and 25ThC.

Finally nice to see that Flickr is still working on some improvements to the service…

Over the past 8 years, you’ve made Flickr your home for more than 7 billion photos. We here at Flickr HQ are constantly amazed by the places you’ve been, the moments you capture, and the millions of stories that are told through your images every day. Today, we’re excited to announce a new feature that will make it even easier and faster for you to upload your photos and share them with the people who matter to you. Introducing the new Flickr Uploadr!

    New Uploadr blog-4

Here’s a peek at some of the new features:

Easily preview and arrange your photos
We’re utilizing some advanced HTML 5 browser technology to bring you a completely new uploading experience on Flickr. You can now add photos by dragging them into the browser. We also show preview thumbnails, where supported, so you can use the intuitive drag and drop interface to manage and reorder photos before they hit your photostream. You can also easily zoom, rotate or sort your photos by title.

Share the story behind your photo
We’ve made it even easier for you to add titles, descriptions and tags, and you can organize your photos into sets like Death Valley 2012 or Beards of my Life. You can now also tag your friends in photos and change licensing, content type and other advanced options right from the uploadr page before publishing to your photostream. So go ahead and tell everyone about your photos!

    Faster is better
You may also notice a huge improvement to our upload speeds – between 20-30% faster on average, and up to 50-60% faster for some of our international users.

    File sizes: now more bigger!
You asked for it, and we’ve delivered. We increased the file size limits for our Pro users up to 50MB and for our free users up to 30MB. That’s huge! Now you can easily save high-resolution images to Flickr and see your photos in pixel-perfect detail.

    And even more
But wait, there’s more! We’re still hard at work on even more features for the Flickr Uploadr. Check back often to see what else we have in store for you and keep letting us know what you think of the new Flickr.

We’ll be rolling out this feature to our users over the next couple weeks, so don’t worry if you don’t have it yet – it will be your Upload experience by default soon. For more information check out our handy list of FAQs, and please let us know if you have any bugs or feedback to share with us. If you’re interested in the technical bits of how we made the Uploadr work, also check out this awesome post on the Flickr code blog.

*Currently, we are supporting versions of Chrome 6, Safari 5, Firefox 8 and up.

Awesome photos posted by Flickr users as recently featured on the Flickr blog…

The administrative, industrial, scientific, and cultural center of Kamchatka Krai, Russia is Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The city is situated on high hills and surrounded by volcanoes, and no roads connect the Kamchatka Peninsula to the rest of the world. This is why travel to the city is expensive but at the same time, because of the remarkable scenery throughout the peninsula, it is growing in touristic popularity.

“Chasing light and color, finding that “moment”. I never leave home without my camera, much like I never leave without my shoes. Photography has given me a means to express myself in ways I never could through other creative mediums. Through photography I try to weave a loose narrative that tells the tales of my travels and life. It is the story of complete strangers, dark alleys, neon lights, the dim glow of the late hours, and anything else that catches my eye.”

Every year in autumn and winter, amazing Starling formations can be seen in parts of Europe including South England, Denmark and France. During the cold months, the birds become highly gregarious and turn into huge flocks of highly variable size. Hundreds of thousands of birds can be part of the flocks. They form tight sphere-like formations in flight, frequently changing their shape providing stunning sights. This is really cool… from one of the Flickr users:

The art project “Das gebaute Bild” (The Constructed Picture), created by Flickr member linus_lohoff, was part of a photography class project at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences where Linus studies graphics design.

    Das gebaute Bild

Das gebaute Bild  Das gebaute Bild

“I’ve been a big fan of Erwin Wurm who transformed everyday objects into art.”

It was the shift in context that fascinated Linus about this project. After some research he started having ideas of floating and disappearing everyday objects, like the banana that appears to be sinking into the ground or the shoe that has been nailed to the floor to not fly away.

“Everything is photographed and set up the way you see it.”

Linus says he needed to use nylon thread to affix some of the objects which he digitally removed later-on, but apart from that, everything is photographed and set up the way you see it. “Since I wanted strong contrasts, I chose backgrounds with different colors. Everything was placed on a small table and then shot with a Nikon D80 and a flash.”

Das gebaute Bild   Das gebaute Bild   Das gebaute Bild

    “Minimum effort – maximum effect.”

Linus chose his personal motto not because he’s lazy but because small changes can produce the largest effects that surprise over and over again. He also likes to try out many different things and finds it most important to always keep experimenting: “My photostream showcases many portraits, night scenes, landscapes, objects, and photograms. I also avoid being limited by technical conditions: Apart from digital cameras, I also use a variety of Polaroid , medium format, or 35 mm cameras.” Linus tells us that he always learns best through experience and the process of creating his art. Photos from linus_lohoff.

This is a great news for all of us who are both user of Flickr and Apple devices like I am…

    Flickr Keyboard

This summer, sharing photos to Flickr will become even easier for Mac users, with the release of the new Mac OS X Mountain Lion. With their Share Sheets concept a “Share” button will be available in many Mountain Lion apps, allowing you to share photos to your photostream with the click of a button.

Until Mac OS X Mountain Lion arrives, you can keep enjoying posting to Flickr from your Mac using iPhoto and Aperture, as well as viewing your and your contacts’ photos on the Apple TV.

Very nice iPad App, I have download it and used it… plus is free!

The Stuck on Earth iPad app from long time Flickr member Stuck in Customs, (a.k.a. Trey Ratcliff) is a great example of what we love to see people doing with the Flickr API and the wealth of geotagged photos on Flickr.

    IMG_1204

The app lets you explore the world through photos on Flickr. Just zoom into any location and photos taken there will pop up on the screen. Trey designed it for photographers and travelers (i.e. You!) to help plan what you might want to see and photograph when wandering the world.

    IMG_1147

    IMG_1197

The app is also built around the Stuck on Earth Community group that Trey has fostered here on Flickr. Members of the group submit photos and curated Top 50 lists around for all kinds of themes like Top 50 Airports and Top 50 Capital Cities. These are then incorporated into the app. You can filter these by category like architecture, entertainment, secret spots, etc. Being able to browse these curated lists is yet another great way the app lets you explore the world through Flickr photos guided by members of the Flickr and Stuck on Earth communities. So if you’re a traveler or photographer check out the app, it’s free!
