It will eventually make its way to it’s permanent home at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.

UPDATE 1: Gothamist has also posted some great photos of the Space Shuttle flying over NYC.

Final section design plans revealed for New York City’s High Line Park and looks awesome! High Line is probably one of the most exciting projects recently opened in NYC, I have visited it a year ago I cannot wait to see the rest of it when it completed:

The proposed design plans for the High Line park’s third and final section were revealed at a community meeting on March 12, 2012. Some interesting highlights: a proposed skyscraper and a play structure for children. Construction on the project (located at the Hudson Rail Yards between West 30th and West 34th streets in New York City) is expected to end in 2013, with its public opening in 2014. More information can be found at Fast Company’s Co.Design and NBC News.

Taxi! A Data Visualization of 10,000 Taxi Trips in Manhattan:

“Taxi!” is a beautiful data visualization of 10,000 taxi trips occurring over the course of one day in Manhattan. The visualization was a collaboration between Tom McKeogh, Eliza Montgomery and Juan Francisco Saldarriaga.

Taxi! is an analytical model that maps the trip data for 10,000 taxi rides over the course of 24 hours. Geographic location data for the origin and destination of each ride is combined with waypoint data collected from the Google Maps API in order to generate a geographically accurate representation of the trip. We used data from taxi rides originating or ending in the neighborhoods of Lincoln center or Bryant Park. The visualization recreates a ‘breathing’ map of Manhattan based on the migration of vehicles across the city over a period of 24 hours, displaying periods of intensity, density and decreased activity. via FlowingData & Digital Urban

Voyeuristic window art on New York City’s High Line by Hyemi Cho:

When the new section of the High Line in New York City was getting ready to open in June 2011, Korean-born artist Hyemi Choworried that she would lose her privacy due to the proximity of her apartment to the new span. Instead of giving into the fear, she painted art for her window that gave the illusion that she was peeking out and waving from behind the curtains. The art has been a hit because it takes the urban park’s visitors by surprise and she has now created additional window paintings for her apartment to further the fun. In addition, she is also creating paintings for other buildings along the High Line. These fun “voyeuristic” paintings have been temporarily removed so that they can be part of Cho’s first solo exhibition, High Line and Personal Stories, at the Nancy Margolis Gallery from January 26, 2012 through February 25, 2012.

…I imagined myself cautiously peeking through my curtain looking outside, seeking the sky and river I used to love to see. I thought, “I am a painter. Why don’t I paint the reality of life and put it out to the public.” In this way, I would (re)solve the restriction of my freedom and my frustration of this invasion of my privacy.

The window paintings have brought me, now an animal in a zoo, delightful interactions with people on the Highline. Everyday, I see people laughing at the paintings and photographing them. Sometimes, I actually peek out and wave my hand, the real life recreation of the painting. The surprise on their faces turns to excitement and they wave back, saying “hi” with their hands. I see that my paintings are a good surprise and make people smile and laugh.

Summer In The City, a photo series featuring the real New York:

    Chai’nese feeling the pressure.

The young version of Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega

This gentleman was chilling with his friends outside a bodega in Mott Haven after winning a domino game. Really liked his attitude and the “jamaican net” tee.

Urban street photographer Stéphane Missier aka Charles le Brigand (and aka Carlito Brigante) captures the gritty feel of “the real New York” in his stunning photo-series, Summer in the City. Missier, a Senior Account Planner at Saatchi X NY, spends his free time walking the streets of New York and photographing his finds, often in black and white.

I Went To MoMA And… Project gathers museum visitor experiences:

The Museum of Modern Art in New York City wanted an interactive way to capture the experience of art with the museum’s three million yearly visitors. What eventually developed was an open-ended guestbook of sorts called the “I went to MoMA and…” Project where the museumgoer gets to leave their mark using the Museum’s pre-printed notecards. The experiment resulted in an amazing collection of “ruminations, reflections, and observations” and many of them can be viewed and shared from the project’s website.

…the wall became more thickly festooned with thoughts, comments, sketches, and jokes, people gathered around to read them, and in many cases were inspired to add their own voices to the collage. (Many seemed tickled to be invited to tape up their creations, even temporarily, on MoMA’s lobby wall.) photo and images via Museum of Modern Art

WWI Biplane on New York City Rooftop

For years, a mysterious World War I biplane has been parked on a rooftop landing strip at 77 Water Street in New York City. The plane is in fact a replica of a British Sopwith Camel fighter, and it was hoisted on to the roof in 1969 as a bit of architectural whimsy by the building’s developers. Film location scout Nick Carr of the blog Scouting NY delved into the plane’s backstory for the Wall Street Journal. photos by Rob Bennett/The Wall Street Journal

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Completed in 1883, it connects the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn by spanning the East River. With a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m), it was the longest suspension bridge in the world from its opening until 1903, and the first steel-wire suspension bridge. And there are a lot of steel wires holding it up across the river as seen in this photograph.
