While nowadays, redscale film can be bought premade, it is based on a simple technique: In essence, photographic film is reversed and wound upside-down into an empty film canister. When used, it is exposed from the wrong side creating beautifully tinted images with colors ranging from maroon, to red, to organge, to yellow. You can find more beautiful shots in our Redscale groups, or in a tag search for redscale+film. Photos from Trapac, ozgecan, celia gómez de villavedón, cherryrae., slimmer_jimmer, raquel fialho, and 25ThC.

Glimpses of World War II seen through photos of modern day Europe:

After collecting old World War 2 photographs taken in major European cities, Russian photographer Sergey Larenkov spent a year traveling around Europe to re-photograph the same scenes as they look today. He then carefully combined the old images with the new ones to create photographs that show two views of the same location captured over 60 years apart.

You can find more of these amazing images over on Larenkov’s blog. Link to the Past by Sergey Larenkov (via Photojojo)

And the new disposable digital camera was born… I hope the image quality is half decent – if it is and the camera very cheap – I can see it being a popular choice for the masses:

Anyone who’s bought low-cost modernist furniture from Ikea has learned to deal with its cardboard spoor, and now Ikea itself may be coming up with some ideas. The cardboard camera above apparently came with press kits at the Ikea Fuorisalone design expo in Milan; it’s powered by two standard batteries and has internal storage that allows it to hold up to 40 shots. A snap-out USB interface seen at the top is supposed to let you transfer the photos, after which the camera can be wiped and used again.

Gizmodo Italy says that the camera will soon be on sale in Ikea stores, but for now the only evidence of it is the photos we’ve seen. Unfortunately, we haven’t found any pictures actually taken with the camera, so the picture quality and the… Continue reading…

Finally nice to see that Flickr is still working on some improvements to the service…

Over the past 8 years, you’ve made Flickr your home for more than 7 billion photos. We here at Flickr HQ are constantly amazed by the places you’ve been, the moments you capture, and the millions of stories that are told through your images every day. Today, we’re excited to announce a new feature that will make it even easier and faster for you to upload your photos and share them with the people who matter to you. Introducing the new Flickr Uploadr!

    New Uploadr blog-4

Here’s a peek at some of the new features:

Easily preview and arrange your photos
We’re utilizing some advanced HTML 5 browser technology to bring you a completely new uploading experience on Flickr. You can now add photos by dragging them into the browser. We also show preview thumbnails, where supported, so you can use the intuitive drag and drop interface to manage and reorder photos before they hit your photostream. You can also easily zoom, rotate or sort your photos by title.

Share the story behind your photo
We’ve made it even easier for you to add titles, descriptions and tags, and you can organize your photos into sets like Death Valley 2012 or Beards of my Life. You can now also tag your friends in photos and change licensing, content type and other advanced options right from the uploadr page before publishing to your photostream. So go ahead and tell everyone about your photos!

    Faster is better
You may also notice a huge improvement to our upload speeds – between 20-30% faster on average, and up to 50-60% faster for some of our international users.

    File sizes: now more bigger!
You asked for it, and we’ve delivered. We increased the file size limits for our Pro users up to 50MB and for our free users up to 30MB. That’s huge! Now you can easily save high-resolution images to Flickr and see your photos in pixel-perfect detail.

    And even more
But wait, there’s more! We’re still hard at work on even more features for the Flickr Uploadr. Check back often to see what else we have in store for you and keep letting us know what you think of the new Flickr.

We’ll be rolling out this feature to our users over the next couple weeks, so don’t worry if you don’t have it yet – it will be your Upload experience by default soon. For more information check out our handy list of FAQs, and please let us know if you have any bugs or feedback to share with us. If you’re interested in the technical bits of how we made the Uploadr work, also check out this awesome post on the Flickr code blog.

*Currently, we are supporting versions of Chrome 6, Safari 5, Firefox 8 and up.

Yesterday I walked by this vintage 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air 2-Door Hardtop and I had to stop and take a few photos with my iPhone… What a beauty!

The 1957 Chevrolet is an automobile which was introduced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors in September, 1956. It was available in three series models: the upscale Bel Air, the mid-range “two-ten”, and the “one-fifty”. A two-door station wagon, the Nomad was produced as a Bel Air model. An upscale trim option called the “Delray” was available for two-ten 2-door sedans. It is a popular and sought after classic car. These vehicles are often restored to their original condition and sometimes modified. The car’s image has been frequently used in toys, graphics, music, movies and television. The ’57 Chevy, as it is often known, is an auto icon.

While many photographers aim for technical perfection, photographer William Miller goes the opposite route. After ‘rescuing’ an old and barely functional Polaroid SX-70 instant camera from a yard sale, he began taking advantage of its glitches by viewing the resulting photographs as abstract art. He states,

The camera sometimes spills out 2 pictures at a time and the film often gets stuck in the gears, exposing and mangling the images in unpredictable ways.

Over time I’ve figured out how to control and accentuate aspects of the camera’s flaws but the images themselves are always a surprise. Each one is determined by the idiosyncrasies of the film and the camera.

The images look like landscapes taken on strange alien planets. He has titled the project Ruined Polaroids.

Remember those beautiful macro photos that showed the inside of musical instruments as giant rooms? Sao Paolo, Brazil-based photographer Valentino Fialdini did something similar, except instead of musical instruments he used small chambers created out of LEGO blocks. With some clever lighting and camera trickery, Fialdini captured the tiny rooms and corridors as to look like giant architectural spaces.

Awesome photos posted by Flickr users as recently featured on the Flickr blog…

The administrative, industrial, scientific, and cultural center of Kamchatka Krai, Russia is Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The city is situated on high hills and surrounded by volcanoes, and no roads connect the Kamchatka Peninsula to the rest of the world. This is why travel to the city is expensive but at the same time, because of the remarkable scenery throughout the peninsula, it is growing in touristic popularity.

Beauty in the Broken: photographs of destroyed Apple projects:

Now here’s a divisive photo series that will draw both anger and cheers: graphic designer (and former Apple employee) Michael Tompert teamed up with photographer Paul Fairchild for a project titled 12LVE that consists of photographs showing annihilated Apple products. Here’s the description:

12LVE [...] provides society a mirror, forcing us to question our infatuation with mere objects. By annihilating the adored, pulverizing the precious, and obliterating the beloved, 12LVE reminds us that although these objects have become quasi-religious icons, we will soon discard and replace them with the new crop—sleeker, faster, shinier.

Argentinian photographer Alejandro Chaskielberg started as a photojournalist before turning to documentary photography and developing his trademark style of shooting under moonlight and using strobes and long exposures to illuminate his subjects. His portrait subjects are asked to remain motionless for long periods of time as he photographs them using a large format film camera. He recently applied his style to a series on residents of Northern Kenya — a location that’s typically photographed under the harsh midday sun.
