Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon, spreading on the slope between the Castle of Lisbon and the Tejo river. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning fountains or baths. It contains many important historical attractions, with many Fado bars and restaurants. Alfama has been inhabited by the fishermen and the poor, and its condition as the neighbourhood of the poor continues to this day. The great 1755 Lisbon Earthquake did not destroy the Alfama, which has remained a picturesque labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares – both full interesting often very small houses. In this photograph you will find a perfect example of Alfama’s architecture. This fantastic print can be now yours, perfect for any decor – order yours today!

This is it… today I have posted the last image from the visit to Lisbon in Portugal! It was a pleasure to visit this city, it has by far more to offer than most people would expect it. I really enjoyed being there and seeing all the great historic sights, I would recommend it for any traveller to stop by Lisbon for a few days to explore it like I did during my visit last April. Here is a complete slideshow made from all the images, which are now available on Flickr for others to enjoy it.

Next stop: Madrid, Spain but first I am taking a few days off from editing… hopefully I will get to Madrid photos some time in second half of August.

    More about it:

Gare do Oriente is one of the main transport hubs in Lisbon, Portugal. It was designed by the Spanish arquitect Santiago Calatrava and built by Necso. It was finished in 1998 for the Expo ’98 world’s fair in Parque das Nações, where it is located. It encompasses a Lisbon Metro station, a high-speed, commuter and regional train hub, a local, national and international bus station, a shopping centre and a police office. The station bears considerable resemblance to Calatrava’s earlier Allen Lambert Galleria within Toronto’s Brookfield Place. Some influence from gothic architecture can also be found. Oriente Station is one of the world’s largest stations, with 75 million passengers per year which makes it as busy as Grand Central Terminal in New York. (Source: Wikipedia)

View this image in a larger format by clicking on it. This image is available for sale – Buy This Print. For more of my photography go to my Flickr photostream.

    More info about it:

The Ginjinha of the Praça de São Domingos in Lisbon was the first establishment in that city to commercialize the drink that gives its name to it. A friar of the Church of Santo Antonio, Francisco Espinheira, had the experience of leaving ginja berries in aguardente (the Portuguese brandy), adding sugar, water and cinnamon. The success was immediate and Ginginha became the typical drink of Lisbon. In the 2000s, the business was in the hands of the fifth generation. Currently, “the Ginjinha” is an exporter for the market in the United States. The production of Ginjinha reached over 150 thousand litres per year. In many places of Portugal, especially in the Lisbon and Oeste regions, there are several producers of this traditional liqueur. In Óbidos, Ginjinha is commonly served in a small edible chocolate cup. (Source: Wikipedia)
