St Mark’s Campanile or Campanile di San Marco in Italian is the bell tower of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy, located in the Piazza San Marco. It is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. The belfry is topped by a cube, alternate faces of which show the Lion of St. Mark and the female representation of Venice. The tower is capped by a pyramidal spire, at the top of which sits a golden weathervane in the form of the archangel Gabriel. The campanile reached its present form in 1514. Masks have always been a central feature of the Venetian carnival; traditionally people were allowed to wear them between the festival of Santo Stefano (St. Stephen’s Day, December 26) and the start of the carnival season and midnight of Shrove Tuesday. They have always been around Venice. Venetian masks can be made in leather or with the original glass technique. The original masks were rather simple in design and decoration and often had a symbolic and practical function. Nowadays, most of them are made with the application of gesso and gold leaf and are all hand-painted using natural feathers and gems to decorate. When you visit Venice, you will notice many shops with masks selling them as souvenirs, the rage from a few Euros to a few hundred… In this photograph you will a typical shop window selling these masks. The Procuratie are three connected buildings on St Mark’s Square in Venice, Italy. They are historic buildings over arcades, the last of them completed, to finish off the square, under Napoleon’s occupation. The oldest of the buildings is the Procuratie Vecchie on the north side of the Square, built as a two-storey structure in the twelfth century, to house the offices and apartments of the procurators of San Marco. They were rebuilt after a fire in the sixteenth century to a three-storey design by Codussi which still betrays something of its Gothic roots. This photograph showcases the beautiful arcade ceiling at the Procuratie Vecchie, it is memorable piece of architecture who would be look great in your home, loft or apartment. The Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mark (Basilica Cattedrale Patriarcale di San Marco and commonly known as Saint Mark’s Basilica) is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice, northern Italy. Venice is a city in northern Italy known both for tourism and for industry and is the capital of the region Veneto in Italy. I think everyone has heard about this amazing city at some point in their life by now. The name is derived from the ancient people of Veneti that inhabited the region as of 10th century B.C. The city historically was the capital of the Venetian Republic. Venice has been known as the “La Dominante”, “Serenissima”, “Queen of the Adriatic”, “City of Water”, “City of Masks”, “City of Bridges”, “The Floating City”, and “City of Canals”. I called it a perfect city to get lost in. There are some many places you in Venice where you simply can keep on wondering around, finding interesting spots. Sure, there are famous spots, palaces and piazzas but Venice is so much more. When I was there, each day I tried to discover the city by simply getting lost amount the many narrow sidewalks and canal, enjoying its architecture. This photograph is a perfect example of one of those spots which I have discovered while stroll around the city. More about it:

With the support of the Scottish Government, The Lighthouse, Scotland’s National Architecture and Design Centre, presented A Gathering Space at La Biennale di Venezia, 11th International Architecture Exhibition. One of the only temporary structures was created specially for the Biennale, A Gathering Space is located in Piazzale della Stazione Santa Lucia, Venice outside the main railway station and close by the Calatrava bridge. The 7m-high wooden structure, created from sustainable materials, including Scotlarch, showcases Scottish design and construction. It invited visitors to sit, pause and contemplate, and from the top offers a whole new perspective on the city. A Gathering Space was the focus of a number of debates and an evening event celebrating Scotland and Venice with djs and live music from bands Isosceles and Wilson Tan.
