With its ability to make boring cellphone photos look “vintage” and “artsy”, Instagram has exploded worldwide. Derided by its detractors as a tool for making bad photos worse, we take an alternate view and argue that Instagram is the greatest thing to ever happen to photography. Its simple filters and social networking features are training cellphone photographers everywhere to think creatively about their photos. Plus, the app is turning its worldwide user base into an army of photojournalists capturing striking images of the people and events around them. As the old photography adage goes, “The best camera is the one you have with you.”

Very cool, both the idea of the trip, the video and of the Fuelband itself which I really want it (but it is not available in Canada yet so I must get it in the States next I am there…)
Filmmaker Casey Neistat was recently contracted by sports apparel giant Nike to create a short film about its Fuelband, a high-tech bracelet designed to keep track of our workouts. Nike was hoping to build social media buzz around a new ad campaign that featured the tagline, and Twitter hashtag, #makeitcount. Turns out Casey and his buddy Max “made it count” by using Nike’s money to fund a 10-day round the world adventure that saw them visit Paris, Cairo, Johannesburg and a host of other interesting destinations before running out of money.
The two men filmed their little excursion and the resulting short film can be found below. The video is a fantastic mix of truly great travel destinations interspersed with inspiring quotes from a variety of prominent historical figures. The combination of the two will leave you wanting to make your own round-the-world journey, although figuring out how to get Nike to fund it is an entirely different challenge.

Yesterday Google has announced Project Glass, a new technology that will allow users in the future to wear Android-based display glasses to stream information right in front of their eyes. As much as I can see this idea to be an amazing and fun tool to use, I can also imagine a huge privacy issues with this type technology. This is a project is still in early development stages and we may be years before anything like that becomes available, needless to say the video is pretty cool to watch:

For their latest prank, Improv Everywhere converted a late night New York City subway car into an unauthorized sleeper car, complete with three beds (video). For our latest mission we converted a New York City subway car into a “sleeper car,” giving New Yorkers the chance to rest their heads during a late night commute. We set up three beds, each outfitted with a comforter, pillow, and sheets. Pajamas, sleep masks, and earplugs were also provided as part of this unauthorized free service. The project took place on the above-ground N train in Astoria, Queens around midnight on a Sunday evening. photo by Katie Sokoler

A new Guinness World Record was set at New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana for the world’s largest human mattress dominoes on February 28, 2012. It took just a few minutes for the 850 participants to tumble over backwards on donated mattresses one-by-one like giant dominoes. “Domino Wizard” Robert Speca designed a “special mattress-domino pattern” for the event was sponsored by La Quinta Inns & Suites. The mattresses, donated by Simmons Bedding Company, will be given to various local charities. The previous record was set in Belgium last year with just 550 people.

My Lego tribute to the end of the space shuttle era. Proving that although retired, this machine can still fly, albeit in toy form. The launch took place from central Germany and reached a max altitude of 35000m. A 1600g meteo balloon filled with helium was used alongside a GoPro Hero, Spot GPS and of course Lego Space Shuttle model 3367. The launch took place on the 31st of December 2011, the equipment was recovered via GPS tracking 240 km S-E from a remote area. I wish to thank Steve Sammartino for the opportunity to do this project and the german airtraffic control for the understanding.

Two of my favourite photographers this year, together at last… Eric Kim from L.A. and Kai Man Wong from Hong Kong both shooting streets of Hong Kong together. As usual video is pretty funny:
In this very special video we meet Eric Kim in Hong Kong to talk about Leicas: the M6 & M2. We shoot some streets shots and get dressed up in rather appropriate costumes. Do check out Eric Kim’s website, follow Eric on Twitter: @erickimphoto and Facebook
